How to short bitcoin
Shorting bitcoin means holding a position that gains when the price falls. There are several ways to build one, they differ in cost and in what can go wrong, and the perpetual future has become the default because it needs nothing borrowed and no expiry managed.

The available routes
You can sell borrowed coins on a spot venue and buy them back later, which requires locating a lender and paying a borrow rate. You can sell a dated future, which needs rolling as each contract expires. You can buy a put option, which caps the loss at the premium and costs that premium whether or not you are right. Or you can short a perpetual future, which has no borrow, no expiry and no premium, and instead charges or pays you a funding rate for as long as you hold it.
Shorting with a perp, step by step
Fund a stablecoin balance on the venue. Open the BTC market and choose isolated margin unless the position is deliberately part of a hedged book. Decide the level at which the idea is wrong and size the position from that distance rather than from a leverage slider. Submit the sell, which opens the short. Then place the exit orders, both the stop and the target, flagged reduce-only so neither can accidentally open a fresh long.
A worked short
Bitcoin is at one hundred thousand. You post one thousand dollars of isolated margin at five times leverage, so five thousand dollars of notional, which is nought point zero five BTC. A fall to ninety five thousand earns nought point zero five times five thousand, which is two hundred and fifty dollars, a twenty five percent return on the margin. A rise to one hundred and five thousand loses the same two hundred and fifty. With a maintenance rate of half a percent the liquidation sits at one hundred and twenty thousand divided by one point zero zero five, about one hundred and nineteen thousand four hundred, which is a rally of just under twenty percent.
What it costs to hold
The carry on a short perp is the funding rate, and it usually runs in your favour. When leveraged demand is long, which is the normal state of the crypto market, funding is positive and shorts are paid. That payment is credited to margin, which pushes the liquidation level slightly further away over time. When funding flips negative the same mechanism runs in reverse and the short pays, losing margin on every settlement even in a flat market.
The risks that are specific to being short
A short is not a long with the sign changed.
- The loss has no ceiling, because there is no upper bound on a price
- Liquidations of shorts are forced buys, so a squeeze feeds itself and accelerates
- The percentage move that liquidates a short is slightly smaller than for a long at the same leverage
- Funding can flip and turn a paid position into a paying one without any price move
- Adding to a losing short in a rally is the single most reliable way to be liquidated at the high
Shorting without much leverage
Nothing forces the leverage up. Post five thousand dollars of margin against a five thousand dollar short and the position is unleveraged: the liquidation sits roughly at a doubling of the price, and you can hold through a great deal of noise. That is also how a hedge on coins you already own is built, and it is the version of the trade that survives being early, which is the usual way of being wrong about a short.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need to own bitcoin to short it?
- No. A perp short is a contract, not a sale of coins you hold. You post stablecoin margin and take the short side, and no bitcoin is borrowed or delivered at any point.
- What is the minimum to short bitcoin?
- Venue minimums are typically small, often a few dollars of notional. The real constraint is not the minimum but the buffer: a position too small to be topped up meaningfully is a position with very little room before it is closed.
- Can I short bitcoin without leverage?
- Yes. Match the margin to the notional and the position is one times. You still pay or receive funding and you can still be liquidated in an extreme move, but the liquidation level sits far enough away that ordinary volatility does not reach it.
- What happens if bitcoin doubles while I am short?
- At any meaningful leverage the position would have been liquidated long before that, and the loss is capped at the margin the venue closed you out of. The unbounded loss is a property of the position, not of what your account can actually lose once the liquidation engine is involved.
- Is shorting more expensive than going long?
- Trading fees are the same. The carry differs and usually favours the short, because funding is positive more often than not. Over a long hold the funding is the dominant cost or credit, so check its recent history rather than only its current value.
